The area took the name Tourist Club in the 1970s, when the government built a public beach there. Its club beside the Le Meridien hotel, with a bowling alley, pool and play area, was the city's most popular leisure spot of that decade, and in 2014 The National reported the district was being renamed Al Zahiyah.
