How Long Does a UAE Employment Visa Take in 2026?

27 October 2026 · Emiracle Advisory

Quick answer: A UAE employment visa usually takes one to three weeks when the employer’s file is active and your documents are ready. Mainland hires under MOHRE’s Work Bundle are officially quoted at 5 working days, while free zones such as DMCC quote 20 working days or less. Attestation, medical retests and employer file issues are the main causes of delay.

Key takeaways

  • The process runs in a fixed order: work or employment permit, entry permit, status change or entry, medical test, Emirates ID biometrics, residence permit and labour contract.
  • GDRFA Dubai quotes an expected completion time of 48 hours for both the work entry visa and the private sector residence permit, once the application is complete.
  • After entering on an employment entry permit you have 60 days to complete residency formalities.
  • There is no passport sticker any more. Since 11 April 2022 the Emirates ID is your proof of residence.
  • In 2026, MoHRE tied work permit issuance to verified health insurance and removed the 30 day WPS grace period for new hires.

How long does a UAE employment visa take in 2026?

There is no single official end to end number, because the timeline depends on who sponsors you and how ready the paperwork is. What the authorities do publish are the service times for each stage. Put together, a clean application where the employer already has an active establishment card and quota usually completes in one to three weeks. The question to ask is not just “how long” but “which stage could stall”.

For mainland companies, MOHRE says its Work Bundle platform reduced the hiring process from 15 steps and 16 documents to 5 steps and 5 documents, cut in person visits from 7 to 2, and brought processing time down from 30 working days to 5 working days. The two remaining visits are the medical test and the Emirates ID biometrics. For free zone companies, timings are set by each authority. DMCC, for example, publishes a service time of 20 working days or less for a new employee residence visa.

Indicative timeline by stage

Stage Who issues it Published or typical time
Work permit (mainland) or employment approval (free zone) MOHRE or the free zone authority Varies; included in MOHRE’s 5 working day Work Bundle target
Employment entry permit GDRFA Dubai or ICP 48 hours expected completion (GDRFA Dubai)
Entry to the UAE or in country status change GDRFA or ICP Same day to a few days, depending on flights or status change processing
Medical fitness test DHA (Dubai) or the emirate’s health authority DHA lists regular results in 24 working hours, with faster express and VIP tiers
Emirates ID biometrics ICP Appointment based; often booked within days
Residence permit issuance GDRFA Dubai or ICP 48 hours expected completion (GDRFA Dubai, private sector)
Labour contract MOHRE (mainland) or free zone Signed electronically within the same workflow

Treat these figures as service standards, not guarantees. Public holidays, system maintenance and requests for further information all pause the clock.

What are the steps in the UAE employment visa process?

The order is the same across emirates, even though the portals differ. Here is how a typical new hire from outside the country moves through it.

  1. Job offer and work permit. On the mainland, the employer submits the offer and work permit application to MOHRE. Under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 it is illegal to work in the UAE without a valid work permit. In a free zone, the employer applies for employment approval through the authority’s portal instead.
  2. Health insurance. The employer must have valid health insurance in place for the worker before the permit is issued. MoHRE confirmed in July 2026 that this check is now linked electronically to permit issuance and renewal.
  3. Entry permit. Immigration (GDRFA Dubai or ICP for the other emirates) issues an employment entry permit. GDRFA Dubai states that it allows the holder to stay for 60 days from the date of entry while completing residency requirements. Your passport needs at least six months of validity.
  4. Entry or status change. If you are abroad, you fly in on the entry permit. If you are already in the UAE on a visit visa, the employer can usually request a status change so you do not need to exit.
  5. Medical fitness test. Applicants over 18 need an approved medical examination before the residence permit can be issued. In Dubai this is done at a DHA approved medical fitness centre.
  6. Emirates ID biometrics. You attend an ICP service centre for fingerprints and a photo, unless you are exempt from biometrics because your data is already on file.
  7. Residence permit. Immigration issues the residence permit electronically. GDRFA Dubai describes the private sector permit as valid for two years and renewable.
  8. Labour contract and Emirates ID card. The employment contract is signed, usually by e-signature, and the Emirates ID card is printed and delivered.

Is the residence visa still stamped in the passport?

No. ICP suspended residence stickers with effect from 11 April 2022 and made the Emirates ID card the proof of residence. You can download a stamped residency details form from the ICP app or website if you need paper evidence. Many people still say “visa stamping”, but it now refers to electronic issuance.

How does the UAE employment visa timeline differ for mainland and free zone companies?

The immigration steps are shared, but the permit authority and the paperwork around it are not. That changes both the speed and the points where things can go wrong.

Mainland companies

Mainland employers deal with MOHRE for the work permit and contract, and with GDRFA or ICP for immigration. The Work Bundle, launched in Dubai in March 2024 and expanded nationally in June 2024, puts these into one flow at workinuae.ae. MOHRE classifies companies into categories, and a company with past violations may face extra checks or restrictions that slow new permits. If you are still choosing a structure, our guide to mainland company setup explains how licence type affects hiring.

Free zone companies

Free zone employees do not go through MOHRE. The free zone authority issues the employment approval, raises the immigration applications and stores your contract. Each zone sets its own service levels and portal steps. DMCC, for instance, adds an arrival intimation step and an e-signature contract step, and its entry permit is valid for 60 days, cannot be renewed and must be cancelled once expired. Visa quota is linked to your office or flexi desk package, so check it before you hire. Emiracle works across 45+ UAE free zones and can compare timelines and quotas before you commit through free zone company formation.

What causes delays in a UAE employment visa application?

Most delays are predictable, and most of them sit with paperwork rather than the government systems.

Employer side issues

  • Inactive or expired establishment card. Immigration cannot issue an entry permit if the company’s immigration file has lapsed. A PRO services check before the offer letter avoids this.
  • Unpaid fines or WPS problems. Under Ministerial Resolution No. 340 of 2026, effective 1 June 2026, MOHRE can suspend new work permits from day 5 after the wage due date for employers who miss salary payments.
  • No visa quota. Free zone packages cap the number of visas, and mainland files can be limited too.
  • Missing health insurance. No valid policy means no work permit.

Employee side issues

  • Unattested certificates. Some job titles, especially in skilled categories, need attested degree certificates. Attestation in your home country can take weeks, so start early.
  • Passport validity under six months. Renew before applying.
  • Medical retests. A re-draw or an X-ray review adds days, and an unfit finding needs specialist advice.
  • Name or data mismatches. Spelling differences between passport, certificates and the application trigger returns for correction.
  • Existing visa or labour ban. An old visa that was never cancelled, or an absconding report, has to be cleared first.

Timing pressure inside the 60 day window

The 60 day window after entry is the deadline that matters. DMCC warns that residence visa issuance must be completed within 60 days of using the entry permit to avoid overstay fines. Book the medical and biometrics as soon as you land rather than waiting for the first salary.

What changed for UAE employment visas in 2026?

Several verified changes this year affect how employers hire. We have only included items reported by official bodies or by news outlets citing them.

  • Health insurance linked to work permits. In July 2026, MoHRE issued a guide, reported by WAM, confirming that a work permit cannot be issued or renewed until valid health insurance is verified. Workers may not be charged any part of the cost, and cover must last for the full permit validity.
  • New Wage Protection System rules. Ministerial Resolution No. 340 of 2026 took effect on 1 June 2026. The former 30 day WPS exemption for new hires was removed, so payroll must be ready from day one, and the compliance threshold rose to 85% of total wages.
  • Upgraded work permit services. In June 2026, MoHRE announced a new phase of work permit services covering 13 permit types, from recruitment from outside the UAE and transfer to part time, freelance and Golden residency holder permits, and opened a public consultation that ran until 30 July.
  • Visa suspension for three countries. From 6 June 2026, the UAE suspended new visa issuance for nationals of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda and South Sudan as a health precaution. Check whether this measure is still in force before planning a hire.

Visit visa changes announced this year, such as wider visa on arrival eligibility, matter for candidates who come to interview, but they do not change the employment residence steps themselves.

How can you speed up the process?

  1. Confirm the employer’s establishment card, quota and health insurance cover before the offer is signed.
  2. Collect a clear passport copy with six months’ validity, a white background photo and any attested certificates in advance.
  3. If the candidate is already in the UAE, use a status change instead of an exit and re-entry.
  4. Book the medical test immediately after entry, and choose a faster DHA tier if timing is tight.
  5. Check every name and passport number against the application before submission.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a UAE employment visa take from start to finish?

When the employer is already set up and the documents are clean, most applications finish within one to three weeks. MOHRE states that the Work Bundle cut mainland processing to 5 working days, and DMCC quotes 20 working days or less for a new employee residence visa. Delays usually come from attestation, medical retests or a blocked employer file.

Can I start working once the entry permit is issued?

No. The entry permit lets you enter and stay for 60 days to complete residency formalities. On the mainland you need a valid MOHRE work permit to work legally, and in a free zone you work under your free zone sponsor. In practice, employers usually wait for the residence permit to be issued before treating onboarding as complete.

Do I need to leave the UAE if I am already here on a visit visa?

Usually not. A status change lets you switch from a visit visa to an employment entry permit without exiting, for an additional in country fee. Whether it is available depends on your current visa type and nationality, so confirm before booking any exit flight.

Is my residence visa still stamped in my passport?

No. ICP stopped issuing residence stickers from 11 April 2022, and the Emirates ID now serves as proof of residence. You can view or print your residence details through the ICP smart app or website if a bank or embassy asks for them.

How long is the residence visa valid for employees?

The standard work visa is generally valid for two years and can be renewed, according to u.ae and GDRFA Dubai. Your Emirates ID validity follows your residence permit, and some free zones may issue different periods, so check your free zone’s own rules.

What happens if my medical test result is unfit or delayed?

The residence permit cannot be issued until an approved medical fitness result is on file for applicants over 18. A delayed result may only add a day or two, but a retest or an unfit finding can stop the process and needs specialist advice before your 60 day window closes.

Is health insurance required before the work permit is issued?

Yes for private sector employers. In July 2026 MoHRE issued a guide confirming that a work permit cannot be issued or renewed until the employer verifies valid health insurance for the worker, and that the employer must pay for it. MoHRE described this as an existing requirement now linked electronically to the permit system.
